Te Anau — Bluff, 5th November, 2025

Quiet day yesterday in Te Anau. Had a lovely  three nights there. This morning we left about 8.30am for our trip down to Bluff for the night before we cross over to Stewart Island on the 9.45am ferry across to Oban tomorrow. But firstly we had to hand the rental car back at the airport, then got an Uber down to Bluff. When we arrived in Bluff checked into a Hotel just across the road from the ferry building to make it easier to catch in the morning. Settled in then went to check where we have to check in for the ferry tomorrow. A walk along the main road which consists of  a few old Hotels, 3 or 4 very old cottages, 4square, Chinese take away, burger and chips and a dairy, all in a row of about 150 metres. That’s town. On our trip down we started off with overcast weather but when reached Invercargill the sun was shining so had ended up very sunny and so warm no wind. Perfect for crossing the straight so 🤞 for tomorrow.

I walked down to the lake after dinner last night to get a few more photos around Te Anau. This road runs along the side of the lake on the left.

Looking across the lake.

This morning we went into town which was only two roads away from our Motel, to have a coffee. Beautiful blossom trees in the Main Street.

Standing in the middle of the Main Street looking down to the lake.

Beautiful evening after dinner on the lake edge.

Looking the same way but closer in.

And closer in again.

Looking up at the motel rooms from the garden we were upstairs. Best motel I have ever stayed in. Asure Explorer Motel & Apartment’s  room 6

Standing on our balcony looking over the gardens very pretty.

We were about two roads up from the lake. This photo taken on my walk back up from the lake after dinner.

This is an amazing little chapel for weddings across the road from the lake.

Looking inside, what an atmosphere, and what a place to get married. Beautiful. 😍

On the road today we saw more piles of logs from the fallen trees in the latest storms. So many farmers have been affected and have been working hard cutting it up into logs. Maybe they will get a return from it all by selling it for fire wood. Won’t be a lack of wood for next winter’s fires.

Checked into our hotel in Bluff. Not a lot of choice but convenient for the ferry just across the road. Build in 1936 and has been beautifully renovated into its original era. Except they had all the windows changed to aluminium. Three of the bedrooms have an ensuites. We have one of those rooms. The rest have to share bathrooms. Thought it would be a bit of fun experiencing part of the past.
